Preparing to move involves careful planning and organisation to ensure the process runs smoothly and with minimal stress. Here is checklist to help you prepare.
3 weeks to go
- Book removal firm or self-hire van.
- Create a system of identifying packaging boxes which will need to be opened first. Label all boxes clearly with their contents and in which room they belong.
- Check your buildings and contents insurance to make sure it covers your move.
2 weeks to go
- Begin to discard unwanted items from cupboards, attics, sheds etc.
- Arrange for the Post Office to redirect your mail.
- Correspond with your Banks, Credit Card Companies, Insurance Companies, Premium Bonds, Saving Certificates, Driver Vehicle Licensing Centre, Inland Revenue and Council Office advising them of your new address.
1 week to go
- Confirm moving arrangements with removal firm. Remove any fixed objects not included in your sale.
- Make sure your loft, garden shed and other storage places have been cleared out.
- Leave clear instructions of how the boiler works for the new owner along with bin day and appliance instructions.
Moving tomorrow
- Defrost fridge & freezer.
- Pack an ‘essentials’ box for the first night in your new home. (Coffee, tea, snacks, cups and a kettle may be welcome soon after you arrive).
Moving today
- Make a note of gas, electric and water meter readings.
- Check all storage spaces and lock all windows and doors.
- Leave keys with your agent or as arranged with the new owner.
